Death of a Camera
by Liz
Sudden tragedy! My favorite camera– the one with beautiful light sensitivity, delicate focus, and insightful color patterning—drowned this afternoon. How? It fell in the cat’s water bowl. Of all the places it could have landed within a 360 degree radius, it had to land precisely in the center of the 4 inch diameter cat bowl. What are the odds? You’d have better luck on scratch-off tickets! Well, dear digital camera friend, you were a faithful companion these 13 years. You will be sorely missed.
Fond Memories Captured Together
Sad!
Sorry for the camera!!!13 years is a long time! But you have taken some absolutely amazing pictures with it!!
Thank you! We had 13 years of good times and (mostly) good photos.
13 years my god .. Seems it belongs a high in quality brand and of-course you are a good user too..
Are you sure it cannot be resurrected?
I am attempting to revive it in a vat of dry rice and those little desiccant packets you find in shoes, but so far, no luck.
One of those moments huh? I’m sorry…
On the up side, you now have the perfect reason to get yourself a new camera. Technology has changed so much in 13 years and if you took these spectacular photos with that camera imagine, just imagine, how wonderful your new photos will be with it’s replacement. RIP old camera, you served your master well…..
My sincere condolences.
Strangely enough people do sometimes get very attached to items, as do I. I refused to sell my old phone, even though I was given a new one, just because I felt it wasn’t fair to the phone after all this time together..
That is upsetting! At least you have some great photos to remember it by!
Try putting it in a bowl of rice, I heard it works for tbowl soaked cell phones. (uncooked I assume)
I have acanon powershot that is dying a slow death, yeah it’s not an SLR but it takes some cracking photo’s and is better than the slimline shaky jobs of today. Will have to get me an SLR whenit dies! I am sure the next camera you get won’t have the same feel or output.
great loss indeed!!!
RIP dear camera!
On no 😦 I remember how peed of I was when my other half killed mine.
Awwww!!!!:-(
A true and tragic loss. Perhaps there is a new friend out there waiting to be found.
RIP
buy a better one…..
I have two new cameras; both take bigger, sharper pictures but they lack….something. You can buy a camera features and lenses and apps and tripods, but unfortunately you cannot buy a camera character! 😦
Sorry to hear about your camera loss. it always sucks to lose an object you love.
So sad, but your tragic tale did provide me with a smile and some entertainment. Can you take it to be cleaned or dried? Or is it too soon to think about?
At least you have your memories!
lovely funeral…
Tough luck! 😦

If you had a dog the outcome would have been different. Thinking it was food falling magically from the sky, the dog would have caught it. (Nice photos, by the way.)
Subconsciously, you just wanted a new camera and now have an excuse to get one.
Reminds me of losing my trusty old Fuji. Drowned by a freak wave in Portugal. I feel your pain.
Lovely pictures.
It took me a real long time to learn my new camera but now I love it. I hope you will love your new camera as well and take more awesome digital pictures!
I love the feet in the tub with the painted nails.
You took some beautiful images with that camera. I promise you will find one equally sensitive, delicate and insightful. Just more proof that our felines will be the emotional wreckage and death of us.
Great shots Liz! Finding a camera with a character is hard!
Aww! That’s so sad! However, your pictures are amazing! http://goo.gl/aX4tx
I feel for you.. I have had a camera die and it is heartbreaking.. you will love your new one too 🙂
Awesome pictures.
these are gorgeous photos to remember your camera by…
Sad! But on the plus side WOOO YOU ARE FRESH PRESSED!!!
LOL! Thanks, Rai. It’s good to know my camera’s death wasn’t in vain. At least it’s good for a few extra smiles!
Bummer 😦 great shots you took with it though! At least it wasn’t brand new 🙂
congrats on the fp!
i clearly remember the death of my beloved digital point-n-shoot: i was clicking away at the tuscan landscape and for a moment i just needed to take in how beautiful it was. i guess i was too relaxed, because after that moment *smack* it hit the ground.
Oh no. It shall always be remembered.

Dear Liz, I know this is hard, but you can make it through. Your camera would be very happy to know that you loved it so much. I cried for days when my Chihuahua peed on my X1 last year.
My sincere condolences. (-_-)
look on the bright side…you can get you a brand spanking new one……
such a beautiful past!….visions of your future pictures….inspiring
my favorite camera had rolled over and died about a month ago; someone fixed it two days ago, and one would have thought i had won the million-dollar lottery!
lo siento. i am sorry that yours cannot be repaired, but what a great story! how many people can say that their camera took a swan dive into the kiddie pool!

My condolences for your less. I lost my very first digital camera (through my own stupidity) a few years ago. There were some great photos on there and it still makes me a bit sad when I think of it. It was a great camera.
Just a side note though, it amazes me that you managed to take a photo in a bath full of water and the camera survives, but a 4 inch water bowl was the culprit for the drowning. Funny how things go sometimes!
Great shots!!! And you seem to have survived one of my horror scenarios. I hope your new camera makes you happy this happened. The photos are great.
Oh noooo! I feel your pain…
Some of the beat pictures I took were.with one of those throw away cameras from yesteryear…
So sad for your loss, as a photographer, I understand. But if it were me (my 2yr old Pentax K-x died that way), it’d be the perfect excuse to treat myself to that awesome new K-30 I’ve been craving since the day it came out!
Sorry for your loss 😦
I know you feel, and congrats in being Freshly Pressed
I wonder: which camera is the one you lost? I can’t believe no body asked you that already. Is not that it matters the most, but curiosity is in our genes, you know? =)
It is/was an early Kodak. I don’t remember which model number (I wore the paint off), but it’s been a darn good camera even if it’s old and takes tiny pictures compared to the newer cameras.
geez, I’m so sorry =( but think about innovation 😉
Alas, I too lost my camera of 7 years a few months ago. RIP. If it makes you feel any better, cameras have come a lonnnnng way in 7-13 years!
Congrats on the Fresh Press.
How to Fix:
take out everything that comes out easy [battery, memory stick, etc.]
place in toaster over on LOW! no more than say, 120′
if your oven can’t manage that, prop the door open a bit to let some heat out.
let sit for a day or so. take out and let cool.
send me money.
: )
well…having used, abused and collected cameras for so many years, i can see where youre coming from….i get attached to so many of my cameras, taht theyve taken up all the space in my house! thats why ive started to sell them off slowly..but painfully! i just worry sometimes after seeing those documentaries on tv about compulsive hoarders….am i becoming one of them….jeeeeez!! great post…
I can feel that when you lose something so close but now it is a time for a new one to carve in its way for you 🙂
Sweet memories 🙂
Such a beautiful tribute! I felt a similar sadness when my first car died. I can’t wait to see what new creativity you have with your new-fangled camera you are sure to buy. 🙂 Good luck!
I feel your pain! I recently had a death of a camera. It was a sad day. Hopefully, it won’t be long until a new one shows up…
sad 😦
but the good thing is you can get a new camera 😀
so be happy
sweet sad ending to its legacy.. time to love a new one, keep clicking!
Very great Pictures!
Cameras have their own personality. They add so much to the picture, and the best ones are equal players in a menage a trois among photographer, subject and machine. Sorry for your loss!
i to have a similar story dear, but in my case my camera slped from my hand.
I’m sorry but on the bright side the pictures are awesome! 🙂
RIP camera. However, you took really great photos and shared some wonderful memories, I am sure of that. Hope you find lovely P.I.C. with whom you’ll create a new chapter 🙂
When anything dies, including a camera, what’s left are the photographs! Beautiful shots.
Great opportunity to change camera…..nice jewels photos by the way )).
probably not by accident? i just thought, after seeing the pictures you shot with your cam. Stop at your top…
There should be unlike button. How can anybody like loosing a camera? I had more luck today. I opened my camera today and saw the glass broken. Fortunately, it was only the filter.
But… about your camera… it’s good you have great photos taken by it. It did it job 🙂
That is horrible! But I love your photos, I have recently got into photography myself, but mine is more nature. Hope to see more of your photos!
What kind of camera did you have? My 60D recently bit the dust due to water damage from a water bottle! SAD DAYS 😦
Do you have access to a dehumidifier? Placing a wet object near one is a great way to dry it out. I don’t know whether the camera will start working again but it’s worth a try.
I managed to save a friends paper files after a basement flood had soaked them by putting them near her dehumidifier and draping plastic loosely around the dehumidifier and the boxes of files. Think of the enclosure as a kid’s table tent; leave room for air to circulate and it should work. The papers in her case were dry in a few days and surprisingly they were not stuck together like they normally do when they are just left to dry on their own.
Sorry about your camera. Your photographs are beautiful. This post makes me think about how nothing is forever, not a camera, not even a photograph. Everything is fleeting, which I guess can be sad, but even beautiful in an odd sense. Bonne écriture.
